Invitation for A New Masculinity: From Battle to Service

As a boy, I learned that vulnerability is weakness. As a man, I was taught worth is measured through performance and I should posture invincibility and suppress threats which contradict this narrative. This code did not serve me. I don’t think it serves anyone. This code stops the evolution we need now.

How might we invite vulnerability and cultivate listening as new superpowers? How might we stop fighting each other for a blinding spotlight?

In Restorative Justice Circle Keeper training, I was taught that the Shamans from Lake Titicaca in South America see men (i.e. the masculine polarity in all of us or Yang) from 25-50 years old as in battle, bringing home the spoils of war. If we choose to go through the long dark night of the soul and we survive this ego death, then we become “wisemen” who are in service.

What if our best service is through disciplined, active listening? How might we train our listening to be capable of creating the safe, brave containers we will need to provide and protect through our current apocalypse (i.e. simply lifting of the veil)?

In my work as a Visiting Scholar at Stanford’s Peace Innovation Lab, I think I created a solution…
And, I would love to tell my THNK family about it and hear your thoughts!
